Abstract

Increased AI use in K-12 education is compelling educators to restructure educational environments. Currently, the literature is limited in sharing student perspectives about AI use and literacy. When student voice is centered, the perspectives of girls and girls of color are often missing. This study amplifies the voices of students who participated in three in-person computing camps by first analyzing middle and high school student responses to an AI literacy survey, and then interviewing girls and girls of color who completed the survey. By intentionally centering student perspectives, our work recognizes the different ways students, especially girls and girls of color, are thinking about AI. This work can inform the role that AI plays in K-12 teaching and learning.
