Technology-Enhanced Social Skills Training for Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder Entering the Workforce

Sat, April 26, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 705

Abstract

For young adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), social and communication difficulties can create substantial challenges with identifying, finding, and maintaining employment. When these students graduate from high school, services from K-12 educational systems and vocational rehabilitation programs abruptly end. The current project investigated a mentor-supported, software-based approach for building social and communication skills for the workforce among young adults with ASD. During a four-month intervention period, our team worked to diagnose the work-related challenges of participants and to implement strategies for developing specific skills, including confidence for succeeding in employment. Findings from surveys and interviews provide insights into participant progress and highlight future steps for encouraging equity and fostering employment opportunities for young adults with ASD.
