Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 709

Abstract

This study examines AI policies of 343 top-tier universities worldwide, focusing on generative AI (GenAI) usage in education. Using a qualitative research design with descriptive quantitative analysis, the research covers institutions ranked in the top 1500 by Times Higher Education. Data was collected from official websites, emphasizing policy documents, student handbooks, and faculty guidelines. Thematic analysis identified key patterns, revealing diverse approaches from prohibition to encouragement, often leaving decisions to instructors. The study found significant regional variations in AI policies, influenced by cultural and regulatory factors. It highlights the absence of a universal AI policy framework, underscoring the need for adaptable policies to meet the unique needs of each institution.
