Abstract

Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) are critical to promoting the civic development of racial and ethnic minoritized students, especially when they are geographically located in underserved communities. This paper focuses on the organizational structures, including the practices and policies, which promote the civic development of racial and ethnic minoritized students from the perspective of students enrolled in four geographically-bound public four-year and community college Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs) in Southern California. The prominent themes focus on the student’s definitions of civic engagement, impetus for civic participation, and their civic engagement. The findings offer recommendations for higher education practices to foster the civic development of racial and ethnic minoritized students.
