Abstract

This paper draws on ecological systems theory to examine how four California community schools significantly reduced their chronic absenteeism rates post-pandemic. Community schools are well-suited to address the multi-faceted nature of absenteeism and work with families and external partners to address barriers to attendance. Drawing on interviews with school leaders and community school coordinators, we highlight proactive and interventionist strategies that have enabled these schools to reduce chronic absenteeism. The paper’s findings include specific and effective strategies employed by these schools and concludes with concrete guidance for educators and policymakers nationwide in addressing attendance challenges effectively.
