Fri, April 25, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 113

Abstract

This research examines the role of social movements, particularly Black organizations, in shaping pedagogical practices in public schools, with a focus on combating racism. The case study centers on “Coletivo Negrada” and its community-building activities, as an example, "Cineclube CineNegrada," – a movie club that debated on racial inequalities in education within a public university in Brazil that did not implement Law 10.639/03 – the law that ensures the teaching of Afro and Indigenous history in educational curricula at all levels. The “Coletivo Negrada” identifies the shortcomings of Law 10.639/03, citing persistent barriers reported by teachers in integrating ethnic-racial themes into the curriculum. In response, the collective has partnered with public schools in Grande Vitória, Brazil, to advance pedagogical practices addressing racism. This study elucidates the role of the Black Collective in the public education system and seeks to contribute to social movements that view education as a strategy for social transformation. It aims to support educators in adapting and evolving their approaches to Black representation and identity by presenting innovative teaching materials, fostering a collaborative teaching-learning process, and engaging with students in a meaningful dialogue on ethnic-racial themes.
