Seeds, Spirits, and Sacrifice: Emotion Management as Misogynoir in Equity-Oriented Professional Development

Thu, April 24, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2E

Abstract

This paper sheds light on the often-overlooked emotional labor and surveillance experienced by Black women faculty (BWF) in equity-oriented professional development programs (EOPDs). By foregrounding the possibilities and harms that come from Black women being witnessed in interracial EOPDs, I offer evidence of how equity-oriented initiatives function as spaces that constrain expansive learning and reproduce existing social arrangements that prioritize whiteness at the expense of Black women.
