Abstract

AI literacy is a crucial component of twenty-first-century digital literacy, fostering responsible users, ethical creators, advanced designers, and proficient producers of AI technologies. Yet, to date it is unclear what exactly AI literacy is or how we should learn and teach it. To address this, we conducted a systematic review of systematic reviews (an umbrella review) and critically analyzed the results of 17 reviews focusing on AI literacy and the teaching and learning of AI. Our findings revealed a lack of theoretical foundations and the need for validated and standardized assessments. Additionally, common themes include the need for an interdisciplinary approach, the integration of ethical considerations in AI education research, and the prompt co-design of professional development for teachers.
