Abstract

This study examined the relationships among parental achievement goals, personal academic and social achievement goals, and achievement emotions in 1200 Korean high school students. Path analysis revealed congruent relationships between parental and personal achievement goals within academic and social domains. Approach-oriented personal academic goals (task-approach, self-approach, and other-approach) positively predicted positive emotions and negatively predicted negative emotions, while avoidance-oriented personal academic goals (task-avoidance, self-avoidance, and other-avoidance) positively predicted negative emotions. Social development goals positively predicted enjoyment and pride while social demonstration-approach goals positively predicted pride and anger. Personal academic and social achievement goals mediated the relationships between parental achievement goals and achievement emotions.
