Moral Development and Empowering Youth: Engaging in Action Civics

Fri, April 25, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 606

Abstract

This exploratory study delved into the impact of small group inquiry projects on the moral growth and self-empowerment of middle school students at a summer civics camp, Camp Civics. Employing an action-oriented civics framework, the participants collaborated in tight-knit teams to pinpoint a pressing community issue, dissect its underlying causes, and craft actionable solutions. Results reveal that even brief, intensive inquiry projects can shift young adolescents’ mindset towards self-efficacy, forging constructive adult relationships and engaging in activities that navigate moral complexities.
