Caribbean Resilience in the Search for Inclusivity: A Duoethnography

Thu, April 24, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 303

Abstract

Grounded in intersectional theoretical frameworks, this duoethnography explored our experiences as two Caribbean scholars studying and working in Atlantic Canadian universities. We asked: How can Caribbean students and scholars residing in Canada harness the values and experiences of their homeland to overcome marginalization and foster empowerment in Canadian universities? Data was drawn from our written narratives and discussions. The results revealed similar experiences of finding resilience through our Caribbean heritage. We have had the privilege of growing up among strong Caribbean leaders. Our bonds with our family and friends in our home country propel us as we navigate the challenges of our academic journey. As such, we remain actively involved in promoting equity and inclusion.
