Abstract

AI integration in education is growing and enhancing learning outcomes. However, few studies have examined AI in informal mobile learning for adult L2 English learners compared to conventional mobile-assisted language learning (MALL). To address this, using affordance theory, this systematic review provides AI integration trends in informal mobile learning for adult L2 English learners. The 50 selected peer-reviewed articles from Web of Science and ERIC (2014 – 2023) were analyzed with inductive thematic analysis. Despite the limitations of our findings, including a narrow literature search scope, our findings make a valuable contribution to identifying effective features in both MALL and AI-powered MALL, and the learning opportunities they offer for adult ESL learners. Implications and suggestions for future research will be discussed.
