Abstract

This longitudinal community-based collaborative case study analyzes an intervention that merges two civic education pedagogies: Public Achievement and Deliberative Pedagogy. Whereas Public Achievement focuses on public work and interest-based collective action, Deliberative Pedagogy focuses on fostering learning, understanding, and decision making across differences. This research over 6 years in two public high schools asks how the integration of deliberative pedagogy supports and constrains the development of critical civic capacities to effect community change among youth.
