Lift Every Voice: Photovoice Experiences Surrounding Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging in Higher Education

Sat, April 26, 5:10 to 6:40pm MDT (5:10 to 6:40pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

U.S. institutions were afflicted by the turmoil of 2020 when explosive conditions magnified the presence of dual pandemics that disproportionately impacted Black academics: systemic racism within the justice system and the COVID-19 pandemic (Spinner, 2021).
At Anonymous University, Black-identifying academics began frequenting the Office of the Ombudsperson (OOO). In response, the OOO initiated a Photovoice (PV) project to improve campus Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB).
Three Black women present how, through photography and dialogue, the PV project created an environment of mentoring, expression, and resource-sharing. The project concluded with the creation of self-advocacy pathways and recommendations for administrators that could help recruit, retain, support, and promote Black academics into the professoriate to create a diverse faculty body.
