Generative AI and Student Ethics: A Survey of Judgment and Behavioral Intention in Coursework

Thu, April 24, 5:25 to 6:55pm MDT (5:25 to 6:55pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 705

Abstract

This survey of university students explores their ethical judgment and behavioral intentions related to using Generative AI for completing coursework. The survey uses the Multidimensional Ethics Scale and six scenarios focused on Generative AI use for coursework. Findings show that students differentiate among uses, finding those in which Generative AI completes coursework for them least ethical. Students also report lower intention to use Generative AI in those ways. Finally, students report that they believe their peers are more likely than they are to engage in the unethical behavior in each scenario. The findings have implications for classroom practices and university policy.
