Abstract

The college experience in the United States is typically construed as an independent journey where the student is at the center as an individual agent who must make their own decisions and develop into a separate adult. While this is partially true, it’s not the full picture of college life for all students. Using a novel inventory of measures capturing perceived parental academic support and perceived parental socioemotional support, this paper addresses the role of the parents in the lives of college students and how this predicts academic outcomes in terms of subjective well-being, social well-being, and academic functioning.
