Questioning Comprehensiveness and Considering Commonalities: Looking Across Science of Reading Bills in Six Different States

Sat, April 26, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 302

Abstract

This data-based review of legislation across six states: California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, Mississippi, and Texas, examines (a) how SoR legislation impacts reform of: curriculum, professional development, assessment, (b) explores the various ways in which SoR is represented, if at all, in legislative documents, and (c) examines the consistency of- and impact of SoR reform regarding curriculum, professional development, and assessment. By examining these components of SoR legislation and implementation we also consider whether or not the legislation is comprehensive and cohesive enough amongst states in order to effectively “remedy” and “repair” the difficulties that students across the nation may have with reading in ways that are equitable and just.
