Abstract

Research has accepted that educational leadership influences student achievement. Educational leadership studies examining impact on student learning have concentrated primarily on formal positions. More recently, scholars have turned their attention to leadership provided by others with successful schools depending upon leadership collaboration. Informal teacher leaders are teachers whose administrators or school system do not formally designate them to perform leadership functions but influence others inside and outside their classrooms. This qualitative research report examines informal teachers’ leadership in three stand-alone middle schools (rural, suburban, and small urban) during the time when NYS was enacting new state ELA learning standards.
