Experience Is the Best Teacher: Black Women Preservice Teachers’ Engagement With Emancipatory Pedagogy

Fri, April 25, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 608

Abstract

This critical qualitative case study explores the interconnected relationship between Black feminist epistemology and emancipatory pedagogy via two Black female pre-service secondary social studies teachers’ curricular choices, ideological stance, and praxis for the classroom. Findings suggest that experiences as feminist and critical pedagogues were important for fighting oppression and understanding the notion of positionality was essential in disrupting dominant narratives.
