“Lots and Lots of Hours”: Clerkship Directors’ Stories of Service and Role Transitions

Wed, April 23, 10:50am to 12:20pm MDT (10:50am to 12:20pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 110

Abstract

Clerkship directors fill a unique space in medical education, helping students as they transition between classroom and clinical learning. Previous literature has specified many challenges of the clerkship director role, but little is known about how stressors and challenges impact decisions regarding entry and exit from the position. We, therefore, are utilizing a narrative approach to interview former clerkship directors to understand the stories of their service in this role and of their transitions into and out of it. Preliminary results suggest common strategies for addressing problems and important sources of support for clerkship directors, which illuminate considerations for successfully engaging future clinicians in clinical education.
