Thu, April 24, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

With the growing international interest in youth mental health as well as other health issues faced by young people in different countries, school health education draws the attention of scholars from both East and West (Meng et al., 2023; Rich et al., 2019; Leahy et al, 2016). However, what stands for health education in the context of ‘health and physical education’ (HPE) curriculum varies widely between North America and other places internationally (Quennerstedt, 2008). This paper reports on the findings of a critical discourse analysis of curriculum policy in HPE across 3 different nation states (China, Japan and New Zealand) and considers implications for the USA in relation to the new standards released by SHAPE America in 2024.
