Designing Multimodal Virtual Field Experiences: Connecting Educators Across Languages, Cultures, and Digital Literacies (Poster 26)

Thu, April 24, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

This qualitative, descriptive study examined outcomes of a professional learning series designed for language educators. Across 14 hours of professional learning facilitated online, educators applied multimodal design principles and digital literacies to create immersive Virtual Field Experiences (VFEs) for use in their language classrooms. The study followed educators’ design and learning processes as well as implementation of VFEs into their classrooms. Findings illustrate that designing VFE designs encourage educators and their students to represent multiple perspectives about the world that: 1) connect digital literacies and cultural experiences advancing local-global connectedness; 2) expand views of literacies as both global and digital, and 3) demonstrate design and co-design process that intersect with students’ interests.
