Abstract

ESD is a central element of Target 4.7 of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which seeks to ensure that all students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to promote SD through education. However, more than half the world is falling behind in achieving the SDGs. Gender equality being of particular concern, the purpose of this study was to design a tool (ESD-5 index) to assess Target 4.7. It consists of 106 items grouped into four-subscales: (1) Institutional Gender-Mainstreaming Approach, (2) Contents and Teaching Methods, (3) Self-Efficacy for Gender-Sensitive Practice, and (4) Educators Training Needs. Preliminary analyses revealed that the inclusion of ESD-5 items, scales, and indicators in current reports on ESD could be useful in providing measurements of Target 4.7.
