Abstract

This study explores the reciprocal effects of student characteristics on teachers' behavior, motivation, and enthusiasm. While theoretical frameworks typically emphasize the unidirectional influence of teachers on students, recent research suggests a more dynamic, reciprocal relationship. We surveyed 108 teachers to understand how different student group characteristics impact teachers’ emotions, motivation, and teaching behaviors. The findings indicate that teachers perceive their emotions, motivation, and behaviors as significantly influenced by student engagement, classroom climate, and misbehavior. Positive student characteristics enhance teachers' enthusiasm and instructional quality, while challenging student groups also lead to increased teaching effort, suggesting non-linear effects. We discuss results regarding theory development and educational justice: If student characteristics influence teaching, classroom composition requires careful consideration.
