Navigating Ethical Dilemmas While Conducting Research With International Students

Fri, April 25, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

The growing number of international students has led to increased scholarly interest and outputs related to students’ experiences and outcomes. Despite this increased scholarly activity, we have found little guidance on navigating ethical dilemmas that arise while conducting research with international students. We thus aim to spark discussion about ethical dilemmas among researchers who work with international students by sharing our own experiences as early career researchers. Beyond the overarching priority of doing what is best for participants, ethical dilemmas should concern all researchers because there are implications for developing methodological guidelines, improving ethics training for new and early career researchers, and reviewing existing policies of research ethics committees.
