Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Through Artificial Intelligence in Education: A Critical Review

Wed, April 23, 4:20 to 5:50pm MDT (4:20 to 5:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

This paper provides a critical and systematic review of the prevailing narratives of artificial intelligence (AI) tools regarding equity, inclusion, and justice in education. It critiques both the overly optimistic view that technology is a universal solution for educational challenges (the “techno-fix” allure) and the deficit-focused perspectives inherent in the digital divide and technology acceptance models. Further, it addresses how inequalities and biases might be perpetuated by the uncritical adoption of AI tools. Finally, through synthesizing the literature, this paper proposes an asset-based framework for investigating and employing AI tools that truly fosters education justice and empowerment.
