Beyond Industry: How Female STEM Workers Flourish as Teachers in Vocational Technical Education

Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

The "leaking pipeline" metaphor highlights the decline of women in STEM fields due to factors such as academic preparation, gender norms, and institutional barriers. Some women leave STEM careers to become VTE teachers, serving as role models for female students. While research emphasizes the positive influence of female teachers, the experiences of these educators are often overlooked. This paper investigates how Chilean female STEM teachers redefine their careers as role models through semi-structured interviews that explore their motivations and transitions. Findings indicate that many women transition to teaching during pivotal moments in their lives, often with support. Despite challenges, they successfully integrate their STEM and teaching identities, flourishing as role models for future generations.
