Abstract

Generative AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot facilitate real-time interactive communication between students and AI chatbots, enhancing learning as knowledgeable collaborators. Despite positive perceptions, their increasing use in universities raises concerns about academic integrity and independent critical thinking. This study aims to develop AI-based scaffolding to foster proactive and critical thinking in students’ writing, rather than bypassing academic efforts. Using a design-based approach, the research focuses on effective prompt engineering and AI-framed questioning to enhance critical reasoning. Employing a design-based methodology, the study iterates through development phases, expert review, pilot testing, and finalization, ultimately creating a robust framework to improve critical thinking in argumentative writing.
