Abstract

Kākau mea nui 2.0: Writing Matters addresses the achievement gaps faced by Native Hawaiian (NH) students through implementation of a teacher focused, job-embedded and cultural responsive professional development (PD) program. This project is supported by research and the evaluation results of Kākau mea nui 1.0 and this presentation shares evidence of successful implementation with 60 teachers in Hawaii and the findings from a study assessing teachers’ attitudes, knowledge, skills, and approaches to teaching writing through culturally responsive strategies.
