Wed, April 23, 4:20 to 5:50pm MDT (4:20 to 5:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3D

Abstract

This research explores the experiences of socioeconomically disadvantaged Latinx students in establishing relationships and sharing college knowledge with college advisers. Framed by Lat Crit and employing plática methodology, this research aimed to understand the experiences of Latinx high school students around the college guidance process. Four students from one suburban high school in a medium district in Southern California were engaged in “pláticas.” The student interviews revealed the following themes: they preferred speaking to college advisers over college counselor, they were not fully utilizing the high school college center until a college adviser went to their classroom or called them out, and lastly, they did not utilize the college center in 9th and 10th grade.
