Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

This paper highlights the transformative power of culture-affirming systems and pedagogy in shaping
the curriculum for AP African American Studies, Financial Futures and performance arts courses at a
public high school in Brooklyn. Led by two Assistant Principals and a Professor of Counselor
Education, authors showcase how curricular spaces can celebrate the richness of their communities,
nurture students' interests, and foster aspirations whilst promoting deeper cognitive engagement. By
examining curriculum and impact of three student-led elective courses, authors provide a practical
perspective on centering students as invaluable assets in the learning process. The paper aims to inspire
participants to implement a culturally responsive curriculum that promotes inclusivity, engagement, and
academic growth to build aspirations of greatness in their educational settings.
