This study is a systematic review of the literature focusing on research that has used video diaries as a form of data collection. The purpose of the systematic review is to identify and synthesize varied video diary approaches used by researchers, paying close attention to temporal, content, technology, and procedural elements of the research design. Through a search of four databases and subsequent screening, 120 relevant articles were identified. Although many of the articles do not discuss video diary methods thoroughly, across the articles we are able to describe different approaches to video diary studies, when each is appropriate, and their advantages and challenges. The findings have implications for future researchers who wish to use video diaries in their work.
