Escape From the Doctor's Office: Merging Gamification and Instructional Design to Foster Artificial Intelligence Literacy

Fri, April 25, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 303

Abstract

This study involved the development and piloting of a virtual breakout game focusing on artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) literacy in healthcare. The scope of content encompassed AI/ML fundamentals and primary applications of AI/ML to health equity. Across four community engagement settings, sixty-two participants played the game, engaged in facilitated group discussions, and completed a post-questionnaire. While the game-based educational initiative was overall effective in stimulating learner interest in AI/ML issues in an enjoyable way, results were mixed regarding participant perceptions about how the game experience supported their learning of AI/ML concepts. Recommendations for future designs include modeling AI use through puzzle design, amplifying focal concepts in the game narrative, and incorporating summarization components.
