Sat, April 26, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

The POLLEN (Promoting our Leadership, Learning, and Empowering our Nations) initiative is a Native American teacher-to-principal pathway designed to increase the number of licensed school principals serving Native American students across the Southwest region of the US. Using quantitative and qualitative data, we conducted an evaluation case study (Creswell, 2009; Yin, 2009) of over 60 graduates from six successive cohorts. The holistic POLLEN curriculum framework centers the Corn Pollen Model that encapsulates spiritual, mental, physical, and social well-being attributes through leadership, well-being, and education. POLLEN graduates are applying the Corn Pollen Model to bolster efforts to shift paradigms from westernized models of education to Indigenous approaches in efforts to provide long overdue just education for Native children and youth.
