Introducing Middle and High School Students to Black Geographies While Combating Queer Erasure

Wed, April 23, 9:00 to 10:30am MDT (9:00 to 10:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

Trans* and gender nonconforming (TGNC) students cannot fully self-actualize without seeing themselves. Marian Write Edelman’s sentiment; “you can’t be what you can’t see” challenges institutional and social erasure. Students subjected to ‘stop woke’ ideology require tools to seek out counternarratives. This paper outlines a k-12 lesson that conceptualizes how black geographies can be utilized to restore erased identities. This field’s methods, coupled with social practice techniques, can help remedy gaps in knowledge regarding TGNC identity. This biographical lesson takes the form of a time traveling trunk that teachers can physically unpack in educational settings (e.g. library, classroom, with a GSA or BSU). The focus, Dr. Rev. Pauli Murray’s biography, is uniquely positioned to help students reconsider constructed realities.
