Abstract

Teacher retention, especially among first-year teachers, is a significant challenge. By emphasizing the importance of effective support systems to address this issue, this study highlights a gap in research on holistic support for new teachers. Based on semi-structured interviews with 24 first-year teachers in northern California, the findings underscore the crucial roles of both social and professional support. Key professional supports include mentoring, professional development, communities of practice, and collaboration with districts, administrators, peers, and school staff. Social support from peers, administrators, and external networks also plays a crucial role in helping new teachers navigate their roles. This study provides critical insights for developing effective retention strategies, emphasizing the need for comprehensive support systems that address social and professional needs.
