Abstract

Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) offers an integrated approach to nurturing students' values, character, social-emotional competencies, well-being, and citizenship dispositions. This study aims to enhance the theoretical foundation of CCE by conducting four bibliometric analyses of publications in the field. Findings reveal that research in CCE is influenced by a common set of predominantly Western intellectual traditions in psychology, philosophy, pedagogy, and participatory citizenship. Moreover, research in CCE has experienced exponential growth in recent years and is adapting to current global challenges. In summary, the findings from the bibliometric reviews support a holistic approach to studying CCE as a research field, incorporating the subfields of character education, socio-emotional learning (SEL), and citizenship education.
