Abstract

The development of teachers' emotional-social competence plays an important role in promoting educational equity. What leadership styles should principals use to enable the development of teachers' emotional-social competence? Under what mechanisms does principals' transformational leadership lead to the development of teachers' affective social competence? This study investigated 529 teachers in eastern China and found that principals' transformational leadership styles were positively related to teachers' social-emotional competence, promoted positive emotional communication in teacher teams, and influenced teachers' social-emotional competence by enhancing their sense of organizational identity. Meanwhile, teachers' self-efficacy played a moderating role in this process. The study also found that principals' transformational leadership did not positively moderate teachers' social-emotional competence for teachers with high self-efficacy.
