Abstract

Despite decades of advocacy for the inclusion of students with diverse backgrounds in educational settings, schools continually face challenges associated with inclusion. Especially when students with or without disabilities come together from culturally, linguistically, ethnically, and racially diverse backgrounds. Given that research shows that designed environments affect students’ inclusion, this systematic literature review explores the features and benefits of learning environments that promote the inclusion of students with diverse backgrounds. Findings from the review showed that features that promote inclusion include student-led engagements, dialogue and respect. These were shown to be beneficial for participants by facilitating the inclusion and participation of all students, strengthening peer relations, fostering interactive classrooms, and improving students’ academic achievement.
