Abstract

This study, investigated the way that Hip Hop literacy was used to foster learning and multicultural community in a culturally and linguistically diverse early childhood classroom in the rural midwest. This study is a year-long qualitative investigation of a teacher's integration of Hip Hop Literacy practices in an early childhood classroom in the rural Midwest. As global migration patterns create diverse communities in rural midwest America, teachers need pedagogies that can engage multicultural and multilingual classroom populations. An early childhood teacher implemented practices from Meacham et. al 2019 in her multlicultural and multilingual early childhood classroom. The connection made between music and literacy fostered learning and communication among dual-language learners who had not spoken in the classroom.
