Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

The educator shortage is now a global phenomenon (UNESCO, 2023). This study examined the influence of a university’s commitment to the recruitment and retention of future teachers and how teacher identity was developed through innovative pathways for high school students, teacher candidates, and early career teachers. Across these varied groups we sought to understand the motivation to teach, and experiences that would help develop highly effective passionate teachers as well as support their developing identity as professionals. Results show that experience, a sense of belonging, and engagement and opportunities were key aspects of the program, club and conference that ultimately influenced the development of their teacher identity and influenced their passion for teaching as well.
