Abstract

This study investigates the impact of extracurricular activities (EAs) on the social and emotional learning (SEL) competencies of students worldwide. Utilizing data from the OECD's Survey on Social and Emotional Skills (SSES) 2023, the study employs multilevel statistical analysis to examine the relationship between 11 EAs and five key SEL areas. Findings reveal diverse impacts of EAs on SEL, with some activities demonstrating strong positive associations with specific SEL domains while others show minimal or even negative effects. This study provides valuable insights for educators and policymakers seeking to leverage EAs for holistic student development.
