Abstract

Based on evaluations of two projects, this study explores roles and benefits of the SLT and support systems for school leaders in the implementation of a school initiative. The paper describes effective innovative ways of supporting SLTs. The structure of nesting networks which combines a large network with subnetworks of schools or participants, based on role-alike interests or guided by a mentor school, proved to provide valuable benefits for participants. The external organization is essential in guiding and organizing supports and providing accountability for the implementation. The structure of SLTs themselves, which include staff in different roles in the school, district, and partner college was also very effective in both developing and sustaining the innovation.
