Abstract

This study investigates the perceptions about Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) technologies, focusing on knowledge, concerns, and willingness to use GenAI. A survey design was implemented. Results from a convenient sample of 68 Indigenous students from various ethnic backgrounds and disciplines in Belize revealed a moderately positive attitude towards GenAI in learning. Students believed that GenAI is useful for sourcing information, brainstorming, and generating text. The findings further revealed concerns regarding cultural sensitivity, output bias, lack of finance, availability, and access to technology resources. Students' concerns influenced their perceptions and willingness to use GenAI technologies. With an understanding of those perceptions related to cultural sensitivity, bias, and access, educators and policymakers can better tailor GenAI implementation in their institutions.
