Abstract

Language plays a pivotal role in human interaction, with bilingualism often linked to cognitive benefits. This study aims to shed light on another dimension: the relationship between bilingualism and social perspective taking. With an online sample (n = 249), a comprehensive set of measures were used to capture the nuances of bilingualism, from language proficiency to cultural immersion. Key findings indicate bilingualism is associated with stronger ability to recognize emotions and acknowledge others’ point of view; and bicultural identity is associated with enhanced state motivation. The study underscores the potential of bilingualism beyond executive functioning and general cognitive domain, suggesting its socio-emotional advantages. These insights challenge prevailing views that often marginalize language minority students and recognize the benefits of cultural exposure.
