Abstract

This study examined parental support as a potential moderator of the associations between growth mindset, achievement (reading, math, science), and persistence. Using PISA 2018 data, linear mixed effects analyses were conducted on 103,627 15-year-old students from 11 countries, spanning Eastern (e.g., Korea) and Western (e.g., USA) contexts. Growth mindset and parental support positively predicted all outcomes, controlling for demographics and nested data structure. Importantly, parental support significantly amplified the link between growth mindset and achievement in all domains and persistence. Cross-cultural comparisons revealed that although the enhancing role of parental support applied in both Eastern and Western contexts, it was more salient in the East. The findings highlight the importance of parental support in facilitating growth mindset effects on learning.
