Abstract

This qualitative study investigated the experiences of Chinese immigrant parents reading with their autistic children in bilingual home environments. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, seven bilingual Chinese immigrant parents in Canada with children aged 3-8 on the autism spectrum were interviewed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, journal entries, and follow-up interviews. The findings revealed diverse experiences among parents, highlighting themes such as aims and motivations, shared reading practices, barriers and challenges, and strategies. This study offers a unique qualitative perspective, contributing to the emerging research on shared reading practices among immigrant families with autistic children.
