Wed, April 23, 10:50am to 12:20pm MDT (10:50am to 12:20pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2D

Abstract

This study explores the experiences of Black Chief Diversity Officers (CDOs) at predominantly White institutions during the anti-Critical Race Theory (CRT) movement, initiated by former President Donald Trump. Utilizing Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a framework, the research examines how anti-CRT legislation impacts the roles of CDOs and their efforts in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Through qualitative interviews and content analysis of state legislation, the study reveals the challenges CDOs face in navigating restrictive environments. The findings highlight the importance of institutional support for CDOs in sustaining DEI initiatives despite legislative barriers, contributing to the broader discourse on racial equity in higher education.
