Abstract

This study focuses on constructing efficient and effective survey measures to assess the sense of belonging among Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) students, emphasizing the importance of valuing student voices while respecting their time. Given the frequent survey requests on race and representation faced by marginalized populations, we evaluated six-item and four-item survey models. Analyzing 499 responses, we found the four-item model provided superior fit and internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = .884) compared to the six-item model. By adopting this streamlined model, we can better monitor and support students, inform program improvements, and enhance discussions among STEM leaders about supporting underrepresented students in STEM fields.
