Actualizing Black Male Youth Healing and Empowerment: A Case Study of a Community-Based Education Space (Poster 1)

Fri, April 25, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

Given systemic anti-Blackness, quality education for Black youth requires resources beyond traditional schools. Community-based spaces can provide liberatory alternatives. More research on Black male adolescents in community programs is needed to address systemic anti-Blackness and racial trauma. This qualitative case study examines a local community-based education program to understand healing and empowerment among Black male youth. Data collection included artifact analysis, participant-observations over two years, and interviews with 21 participants, including alumni, mentors, staff, instructors, and a guest speaker. Findings highlight the importance of fulfilling relationships, community engagement, and cultural affirmation. The study demonstrates how bespoke frameworks can inform the co-creation of culturally sustaining programs that enhance Black male youth well-being.
